I need help making a decision

Post a Comment

I need help making a decision between the grad schools at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Notre Dame. Notre Dame is offering far better funding with no teaching responsibilities for the first year where as Boulder expects quite alot of teaching for alot less money. However, I hear Boulder is a very nice place. Any input and advice would be greatly appreciated.

What's your area of interest? Of that area of interest, do the faculty in that area produce students who get the sorts of jobs that interest you? (You can check math genealogy and then google). What is the department atmosphere like? Do they care about students on a departmental level and on an individual faculty level? Boulder is a beautiful place, but perhaps South Bend has its charms too? I recommend you visit both places in person and try to picture yourself spending several years in either place.

I would advice you go for Boulder. As you know everything is not about money and you've said it all yourself i.e. its a nice place and you get to have more experience from the place.

This is really one of the hard ones. You don't know at the beginning of graduate school what you're getting into, no matter what. Until you've been a teacher, or a researcher, you don't know which you like. Sometimes you won't know what you want to do when you're grown up, even once you're grown up.

Visit them both. If one of them feels "Right," go there.

In a few years, whichever decision you make will likely turn out to have been the best one for you. Good luck!
