Our search is in a holding pattern right now, waiting to complete campus interviews. In the mean time, I did a little digging regarding what sort of salary we should be offering our top candidate. Data on the flip side...

Two great places to find such data are the Annual Survey of the Mathematical Sciences (a co-production of the AMS, ASA, IMS, MAA, and SIAM) and the CUPA-HR annual surveys (it stands for College and University Professional Association for Human Resources).

Here's the numbers that might be most useful to all of you out there applying for jobs:

Institution Type Average Starting Salary in Math
Public Ph.D. Granting $77,108
Private Ph.D. Granting $69,574
Ph.D. Granting - Applied $68,800
MA Granting $54,235
BA/BS Granting $50,260
Overall Math/Stats (CUPA-HR) $53,787

Here is the latest AMS survey (which appears in next month's issue of the Notices.)

Here is the latest CUPA-HR study.

Just wondering if we are going to end up hearing the end of the job search saga. It seems to have dropped off right when it was getting to the interesting part.

I agree, any updates would be useful. I do have to admit that the average salaries are a bit low...I mean 80 grand for a Ph. D. ? In any case, stop by if you can: get pregnant
