| In late August 2008, the Mersenne number 2^{43,112,609}-1 was proved to be prime, and only a few weeks later, in early September 2008 2^{37,156,667}-1 was proved to be prime. These results were verified and released shortly afterwards. These numbers have 12,978,189 and 11,185,272 decimal digits respectively.
As they both have over 10 million decimal digits, they qualify for the Electronic Frontier Foundation's $100,000 award for the first 10 million digit prize. This prize will be shared between the discoverers and the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search, whose press release is here.
