Until Fall 2007, there was no mathematics magazine aimed at the public on general sale in the United Kingdom. Sarah Shepherd, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, decided that such a magazine would raise the profile of mathematics amongst the general public, and so she started iSquared to fill the gap.

| iSquared aims to highlight "real-world applications of mathematics"; it combines articles on mathematics research from all areas of mathematics with interviews with mathematicians and reviews of recent popular books on mathematics.
So far there have been:
- profiles of John von Neumann and Georg Cantor
- articles on the Prisoner's Dilemma and public-key cryptography
- an analysis of the mathematics of malaria
and much more.
It makes a very good gateway into mathematics; the articles are written for a general audience with only a very modest mathematical background, so it can be read and enjoyed by many people, not just research mathematicians.
