The Abel Prize for 2008 has been awarded to John Griggs Thompson and Jacques Tits for ``their profound achievements in algebra and in particular for shaping modern group theory''.

The Niels Henrik Abel Memorial Fund was established on 1 January 2002, to award the Abel Prize for outstanding scientific work in the field of mathematics. The prize amount is 6 million Norwegian Kroner (about 750,000 Euro) and was awarded for the first time on 3 June 2003.

The prize is open to all areas of mathematics; the previous laureates are Jean-Pierre Serre, Michael Atiyah, Peter Lax, Lennart Carleson and S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan.
