First Interview Requests & Prepping for JMM Job Search

I have received a few requests for interviews at the Joint Meeting... the problem is that none of them are for the jobs I want!

Post a Comment

This is the 3rd installment of a semi-regular blog on my search for a tenure-track job this year.

I mentioned in a previous post that I'm only sending out a few job applications this year... for the few places that I think would really fit with my given constraints. I have now heard from three search committees... but they are unfortunately not the places I applied to and don't fit my search criteria. I am giving myself to early January to hear back from the two I'm most interested before I start getting worried. I was hoping they would have requested an interview at JMM, but they're not listed in the Winter Employer List, so perhaps they just won't be there. Is this about the right time frame?

I think this part of the process is about the worst for those of us applying for jobs. We still have no idea what are chances are... and probably many of us still haven't heard from our top choices. I'm hoping that like last year, things will all start to come into place with the new year. Three years ago when I was looking for my first job, I wasn't even planning to interview with my eventual employer... but I ran into an old professor who suggested it, and after speaking with them I knew it was the right place to be. I'm currently quite happy with the three years I have spent here. I just hope it goes that well my second time around!

With final exam grading to be finished on Wednesday, I can spend most of the time between now and then preparing for my talk at JMM... which hopefully will keep me distracted from worrying about the job market and whether I'll get the interview I want. On the other hand, I get to worry about whether I'll have potential employers to impress.

For the readers, a couple of questions: (1) What are potential employers looking for when they attend an applicants' talk at JMM? (2) When should I start getting worried about not hearing from my top choices? (3) Any tips for JMM interviews?

On another note, it has been great to read how things go on the other side of the table (@nowhiring THANKS!)

In my first job out of grad school, I didn't hear from a single one of my choices -- and I had a LOT of applications out -- until the JMM. And not a single one of those requested an interview beforehand. In other words, it was complete "radio silence" until about mid-January. So I would just say be patient, and good things will come to those who wait. At my college, we're a little unusual in that we try to get our hiring done BEFORE the JMM even start. My interview, for instance, was done in November and I had accepted an offer before Thanksgiving came. But under normal circumstances, I think search committees want to have a very circumspect view of all the candidates they are thinking about before they start spending serious money to bring them on campus. Hence the wait until the JMM.

... you could just pick up the phone and call the committee chair, or drop her/him an email. If you are frank about the situation they are likely to be frank with you in return. "I only applied to a small handful of jobs and I am extremely interested in your position. I would like to know where I stand in your search so that I can better gauge my options." I'm actually surprised how few direct emails/calls I've received this year. When the number of applicants is so high, anything you can do to stand above the crowd is probably a good thing.

Here is a site where you can list the schools that have asked for an interview. One of my top choices is on there, and I didn't get an interview. :-( http://www.wikihost.org/w/academe/mathematics PLEASE, if the the three schools that you do have interviews with are not on there already, add them to the list! It helps others to keep from going crazy with the unknown. Who else out there jumps whenever their computer makes that "new email" noise?

Until today, I only have one JMM scheduled interview, and I already saw a lot of schools have scheduled their interviews on wiki, including my top choices! I am really upset now, and I am wondering what is wrong with my application. Before this week, I was confident with my background. Now I think I will proabably end up jobless-:(...
