I am on the job market this year, and was asked to blog about my experiences here. I thought I'd start by sharing a little about me. I currently hold a postdoc that places approximately equal emphasis on research and teaching. My time here is coming to a close, so I'm back on the market again. I do feel fortunate to have a little better idea of what I'm getting into this year. I remember being rather shocked at how many things are required for an academic job application... the research statement, the teaching statement, the vita, the AMS cover sheet, and all that. Hopefully coming into it knowing that I need all those things I'll be better prepared...

| In later posts, I'll try to cover aspects of all these things, and mention how the process is going for me. At this point, I'm starting to realize that November is almost here, which means some of the earlier deadlines are approaching. Yikes! I did start putting together my application early, but I've still got a lot more work to do...
I discovered RSS feeds this year, and they have made keeping track of new job postings a lot easier. I use Google Reader, but there are plenty of other RSS readers out there. Most browsers have feed viewers built in, and Microsoft Outlook also has that capability. I also use page2rss to generate feeds for the job sites that don't have them (most). Here are the feeds that I'm tracking:
I tried tracking the AMS job listing as well, but couldn't get it to work. See http://www.ams.org/eims/eims-search.html for this list. (P.S. Here's the feed generated by page2rss for the YMN site: http://page2rss.com/atom/110dd1311178fa4c8328dabc30885612). If you're interested in generating an RSS feed for your course website, etc. just go to http://page2rss.com/ and submit the URL. It's pretty cool.
Hopefully all this technology will increase my chances of getting a good job... or at least reduce the amount of effort required to find one! If you have other tips for keeping track of jobs, go ahead and post them all in the comments.
I've also decided to try twittering my job search... if interested check out http://twitter.com/mathjobseeker. |
