We recently returned from interviewing candidates at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, and through hallways conversations I heard of some differences from earlier job searches. I'm wondering if others have found anything similar or different.
I had noticed before the meetings that we had slightly fewer applications than last time, although the pool of those who did apply was just as strong. In chatting with others at the JMM, it sounded like schools who stuck with paper applications had the same trend. I spoke with a few schools that used MathJobs.org, however, and they received many more applications than in the past.
On the other hand, MathJobs.org states, "In the last 12 months, 196 employers from 42 states in 3 countries have used the service for 522 job ads;...4540 applicants have submitted 89790 applications, with an average of 19.78 positions applied per applicant." It's not a huge number of positions that the applicants are applying to on average, so I'm not sure how much weight to place is my observations.
