I'm currently an actuary wanting to go back to grad school and need some advice on where to apply.

Hi,

I graduated last year with a triple major in math, finance and comp sci with a cumulative of 3.8 (3.7 in Math). Unfortunately, I do not have any math research experience (CS only). Now I'm thinking I'd like to go back and get a PhD in Math. Hopefully become a quant or teach after...

Although, I didn't take the absolute hardest math classes because I thought I would be a actuary, I did have a few (Set Theory, Graph Theory, PDE, Linear Optimization, Probability plus the standard set).

I also have some teach experience as undergrad (TA'd two semesters --although they were called Recitation Mentors if you were an Undergrad at Rutgers)

Any ideas what schools I should consider? I know Columbia and Courant are reaches. I was wondering what's more on my level and what are some safeties? I'd like to stay close to probability or stochastic calculus because rather than go off on the pure math side..

Thanks! It's going to feel good to be back...

GRE scores and also which undergraduate program did you graduate from. Those are both big parts of the picture. In terms of figuring out which schools would make sense, there are a couple places to research. There are a couple different sources to research.

phd.org has a good broad set of information for many different majors.

US News has good rankings information which some good stats - which is another good place to start.

Graduate Admission Statistics and Profiles and thegradcafe have information on applicant profiles for different programs.
