New Mersenne Prime Discovered News

The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search has discovered a new largest prime number; 2^{32,582,657}-1. This number has about 9.8 million decimal digits.

A previous YMN story by Kevin Charlwood gives more details about the GIMPS project.

One can buy posters showing the largest prime number known; the website will also sell you the jeweller's loupe you will need to be able to read the print on them.

If this prime had had one million digits it would have won its discoverers $100,000 from the EFF.
