GRE Math Subject Test Grad Life

Hi all, I am an aspiring mathematician who is still pondering over whether to sit for the GRE Math subject test. In my last attempt, I scored less than 70 per cent as I was too slow in my computation. Many of my lecturers have urged me to take it again, as I did well for most of my undergrad pure math courses. Eg, I scored A+ for subjects like lebesgue integration and analysis. However, I am just not that confident of taking it again. Any advice? Boon Ping

[new] First you don't succeed (5.00 / 1) (#3)

If at first you don't succeed then I suggest you stand up and try again. I've had my own share of tests and failures. Back in college I had to repeat two major subjects twice because I didn't get the quota grade of 83%. I missed by 1%. I had an 82% as my final grade. But then that didn't stop me from my determination to graduate. So here I am now, done with school, done with the board exam and practicing my profession. Of course I couldn't have done it without the encouragement of my family, friends and boyfriend who is now my husband. So you see, life is really full of ups and downs , it is just a matter of getting up and continuing what you really desire to achieve in life. Hope I was of any help to you.

Have you tried the book Cracking the GRE Math by Princeton Review's Steven Leduc? No doubt the more you go over the material the better and faster you will get. Trying all of the examples and exercises yourself should really charge up your ability. You have a couple of months to do so, so go for it.

The first time I took the math subject GRE I scored something like a 60. I took it again at the next opportunity (a few months later) and scored an 80, which was good enough to get me in some places. So it is possible to improve yout score significantly. Of course, it also helps to study and practice, such as with the Cracking the GRE text that the other poster recommended.

of course the big problem with everyone who takes gre math is time...the test assumes that being able to think fast is an indicator of intelligence. this is, however, to some extent true...since the test covers basic things, one should be able to recognize the correct method of solution quickly...if you didn't do that well on your first attempt, review the essentials and try again, given a large amount of time, anyone could do well, the ability to do well quickly is what separates the men from the boys...
