"The Next Chapter" in the Chronicles Work and Family Life

In The Next Chapter, posted May 1, 2006 in the Chronicle Careers section of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Paige Newcastle (a pseudonym) reflects on "the middle passage through academe" -- the period after jobs have been gotten, and families started. For her and her academic husband, life turned out well, but not necessarily the way she expected.

This article is one of the Balancing Act columns, which examine "How to find a balance between work and family". Other recent columns describe telling a dissertation committee about pregancy, a snapshot of a single professor trying to adopt a child during the tenure process, and a new faculty member's dangerous attempt to lose weight.

An academic couple wrote a response to Paige Newcastle's article, in A Happier Story. The authors teach at a "third tier" institution, but they've found it to be full of rewards.
