What is a good enough GRE mathematical subject score?

Post a Comment

Hi, I am wondering what is a good enough math subject score and its relation to GPA. If the GPA is 3.0, then how high a score can help to improve the GPA? What about other GPAs, for example 3.5? Suppose the GPA comes from a normal university and this person is an undergraduate majoring in mathematics, and is applying for the applied mathematics or computation doctoral programs of a graduate school in the U.S.A. I'm hoping for your opinions. Thanks in advance! Best regards!

I emailed a top 30 program director, asking what the cutoff score was for the GRE Math, he said there was none, and that the entire picture of a candidate is looked at (along with transcripts and rec.'s). So, obviously it's good to score well on all fronts, but it varies. I think I recall Minn.'s director giving me the scores of accepted applicants and if I remember correctly it ranged from in the 50's to 99%.

I was searching again with google on GRE Math scores, and quote from Univ. Minn.'s FAQ site: "Here are 20 of the GRE Math Subject scores of typical incoming students accepted with financial support, beginning fall 2005: 830 (93%), 790 (88%), 600 (44%), 880 (98%), 800 (89%), 770 (85%), 880 (98%), 590 (42%), 840 (94%), 910 (99%), 900 (99%), 820 (92%), 890 (98%), 820 (92%), 880 (98%), 890 (98%), 730 (77%), 830 (93%), 760 (83%), 650 (57%). Generally speaking, we aim to keep admissions to those with GRE Math Subject Scores above 750, but do on occasion go below that if other factors are strong enough to compensate. Our GPAs ranged from about 3.6 to 3.9, though, again, there can be outliers." You can find this quote on the following link: http://www.math.umn.edu/grad/faq/index.shtml So it does look like one has to score quite high for some programs, or a lot of the top programs, generally speaking. There's only 3 scores in the 40-60% range, the others are like 80+%. Oh well...

is posting stuff on forums for no real purpose other than to get people to discuss trivial or controversial matters that don't really matter.
