Currently I am trying to find a graduate school and/or job. My whole entire life I have sort of had my opportunities handed to me, so this is the first time I am just really at a loss as far as knowing what to do. I know quite a bit about the schools here in Oklahoma, but I would like to go a bit more north or really just any where outside of this geographical area. I am sure I will figure it out, but if anyone has any suggestions on graduate schools I am all ears. I would prefer a smaller program where they are going to pay attention to me. I do not do very well without some sort of attention. I don't know, and right now is bad because the deadline for most schools has already passed. But at any rate I am sure I will figure something out.

This site is littered with different ideas about how to go about applying to graduate school and what the application process is about. At the YMN Town Hall meeting this year someone also mentioned a really great book, A Mathematician's Survival Guide by Stephen Krantz (also found on Amazon here)which outlines what is recommended for graduate school and early career development.

My semester has already started so I haven't gotten to read most of it, but I have been able to read a part that talks about graduate school and ideal situations to get in. Unfortunate for me, I don't fit the ideal situations. But he does mention that you don't need perfect this and that to get in.

If I were looking to find schools that have deadlines that haven't passed, I would figure out what kind of schools I wanted to go to first and whittle down that list. It's easier to say, "i'd like to go here - oh wait the deadline has passed" and then if you get a job this year and need to apply again you have already at least looked at the school website.

Then if you take a year off and apply again, you aren't surprised when some schools have deadlines in November or something (or Sept-Oct worst-case scenario).

Also, if you have to take the subject test then you can plan for that because it is only offered 3 times a year anyways (April, November, December).

Also, keep your hopes up. There are some programs that have rolling admissions or deadlines in February (which hasn't passed) or even July. You might not think those the ideal programs to get to, but some math is better than no math (in my opinion).

I posted a similar question a few years ago, and several people replied with the names of graduate schools that they considered to be "friendly". Those recommendations are in the thread here.

Central Michigan University offers a doctoral program that may be to your liking--if you are willing to go that far north. Good luck!
