Reflections on REUs Undergrad Life

Many of my colleagues have been involved in REUs over the years; I have been working with students too this summer. In this note I'll collect a few of my thoughts on them.

We have had articles on them before, but I'd never been involved in one personally before. As it draws to a close, I think that it's very important for the project leaders to be sure that the project will actually work; if a project completely fails because it's impossible or because it's way too hard for the students, then they will not really get anything useful out of the experience. (If one is not careful, they will agree with Barbie that ``Math is hard'' and be discouraged). Here (at the bottom) is some advice for applicants --- "Take the hardest math courses available" as preparation for the REU. The classic ``Get good letters of recommendation'' should also be emphasised. A quick web search also turns up the booklet Reinvigorating the Undergraduate Experience, which might be a useful book to request for your institution's library.
