The Editorial Board met at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Atlanta on January 7, 2005. Below are the minutes.

Notes from the YMN Editorial Board Meeting on Friday, January 7, 2005 at the Joint Meetings in Atlanta, Georgia.

Present, in alphabetical order: Kevin Charlwood, Dov Chelst, Chawne Kimber, Dave Kung, Josh Laison, Heather Lewis, Jon Vano, Emil Volcheck

1. Announcements

  • We welcomed new member Josh Laison to the board, who hails from Colorado College. Welcome Josh!
  • Karrolyne Fogel and John Kuchenbrod are stepping down from the board, although they intend to stay involved with the YMN. Their years of service are very much appreciated.
  • Dave let everyone know that the editors' list has been down for a while. He had sent several emails, but got no replies and didn't learn why until very recently. The email address editors@algebraiccurves.net is still working, however.

    2. Panel Report

  • The MAA-YMN Panel Discussion on Career Paths for Undergraduates in Mathematics on Wednesday, January 5 (2:15-3:35pm) had 115 people in attendance. A toast to the organizers (James Hamblin, John Vano, and John Kuchenbrod) and do the panelists (Linda Thiel (SIAM), James Daniel (U Texas-Austin), Paul Humke (St. Olaf College), Emil Volcheck (NSA), Michael Monticino (U North Texas))! In general, the material for undergraduates in very well attended, perhaps especially as there are not many activities geared towards undergrads.
  • MAA Project NExT-YMN Panel Discussion on Dealing with the Two-Body Problem on Wednesday, January 5 (3:50-5:10pm) was attended fairly well, but not as heavily as the previous panel. It turns out that there was a MAA/Project NExT panel on tips on interviewing at the same time that had a packed audience, and this may well have drawn people from our talks. A great big thanks to the organizers (Kim Roth and Karrolyne Fogel) and to the panelists (John Bukowski (Juniata College), Kristen Lampe (Carroll College), Peter Lampe (U Wisconsin-Whitewater), Catherine Roberts (The College of the Holy Cross), Cathy Stenson (Juniata College))!
  • Further thanks to Kevin Charlwood, who organized the MAA Project NExT-YMN Poster Session on Thursday, January 6 (2:00-4:00pm) with Kenneth Ross, and to Dave Kung, who organized the YMN Town Meeting on Thursday, January 6 (7:30-8:30pm).

    3. Goals for next year

  • Get the word out about us to students, advisors, etc. As part of this, raise our membership back to over 1000. Dov will be in charge of contacting people at both the graduate and undergraduate level (for example, contacting advisors to students, math clubs, and student chapters of Pi Mu Epsilon or the MAA). He will request help as necessary, possibly from James Hamblin or Lloyd Kilford (who were not able to be at the board meeting, but volunteered to take on tasks).
  • Increase the number of editors, ideally having an editor with each color dot from Project NExT. Dave will be in charge of this.
  • Improve the web site and add more articles (with the intent of increasing traffic on the web site). Jon will be in charge of the site itself, including making it more PR friendly (such as adding a button to make it easy to send articles to other people). Chawne and Dave will specifically be in charge of "Paths to Math".
  • Post articles about the YMN to update its image. Jon and Dave have written an article for Math Horizons; another place to post information might be Focus.
  • Other Ideas (Developing more dialogue, since there are not many comments on articles; update and improve the FAQ; post examples of CVs; have a question of the month and/or link of the month; develop an annual calendar of sorts, planning the types of articles that will appear every year at about the same time (i.e. paying attention to the cyclical nature of the job market); look at the minutes from previous Board Meetings to see what old goals may have been missed.)

    4. The Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio, TX, January 12-15, 2006 We decided to request times for three panels, two of which are for undergraduates.

  • Jon and James will organize a panel on "Beyond your Bachelor's: Exploring your Options". [Secretary's Note: This title reads completely differently if you eliminate the apostrophe!]
  • Dov and Heather will organize a panel on "Transitioning to Graduate School".
  • Kim and Sarah Ann Stewart [mentioned above as a potential editor] will organize a panel on "Ideas for Professional Development in Research, Teaching, and Service" (catchy title to be supplied later). The idea, which she relayed through Emil, was to have several panelists such as: someone from Project NExT (many grad students are not aware of this; someone from Project ACCCESS (Advancing Community College Careers: Education, Scholarship and Service)(the equivalent of Project NExT for two-year colleges); someone from the MAA (apparently there are teaching-enhancement grants that are not applied for); someone from the Joint Summer Research Institutes at Park City, targeted for graduate students, or faculty who could talk about conferences that are particularly friendly; possibly someone from the AWM who could talk about professional development; someone who could talk about how to get nominated to work on an AMS or MAA committee or how to become a reviewer for one of their magazines.
  • Chawne will talk to the MAA people to see if they are planning another panel about interviewing. If they are, would they be interested in having the YMN co-sponsor the panel? Since we are already hoping to organize three panels, it doesn't seem practical for us to be in charge of a fourth panel, but co-sponsorship might work. If not, we can save the idea for a future year.
  • Kevin will organize the poster session with Ken Ross again.
  • There was discussion about contacting Project NExT to see if we can help out with the undergraduate poster session and have our name listed as a co-sponsor. In the past Michael Montacino has been the person in charge of this, but it might be changing to a committee structure. In that case, we could see if anything could be worked out. Jon also volunteered to help with this.
  • Chawne will be the Joint Meetings Coordinator for one more year, and then hopes to pass it along to another person. We need to request slots for events by February 1, and all titles and descriptions should be in by May 1.
  • A final note: Chawne prepared a flyer about the YMN for the student hospitality booth this year.

    5. MathFest in Albuquerque, NM, August 4-6, 2005

  • As background, last year at Joe Gallian's request Jon meta-organized six panels for a graduate student program (the other portion of the program was a TA prep workshop). He has already offered to Joe to do something similar this year and will ask Jim Tattersol if he can organize the same type of graduate program as last summer, though perhaps on a smaller scale.
  • One panel could be on the job application process, such as preparing a CV and cover letter. New NExT fellows could be asked for help with that and other panels. It was suggested that a poster session would be a nice idea for MathFest, but would take too much work to put together this year.

    6. JCEO [Joint Committees on Employment Opportunities] report by Emil and Kevin They recommend decreasing the fees for the employment registry. (It was noted that many people seem to prefer conducting interviews outside of the official Employment Center, though this is possibly unrelated to fees.) They would also like an MAA member on the committee, and they specifically wanted to invite people from the YMN. Dave volunteered to be on the committee, hoping that this could lead to a closer relationship between the organizations regarding job information. One possibility is to publish updated job information on both the YMN and the MAA web site, with cross-links. The comment section on our website could prove very useful for allowing readers (on either site) respond to the articles.

    7. Let's reevaluate where we are in a year, and see how well we've met our goals.

    8. Finally, a big thank you to our Grand Poobah Dave and all the past and current members of the board! Thanks!
