Need ideas for a PHD thesis Grad Life

Hello, I am currently doing my Phd in Mathematics in Montreal and have realized that the area I am doing my research in will land me with no job options when I graduate. While there is some merit to studying a subject I love, I would also like to be able to find a job once I graduate. Any ideas about areas which are currently demanded by private companies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

[new] hey, what subject are you studying? (none / 0) (#1)

Your question is too broad. Tell us what you are studying and perhaps we can point you to a related "employable" area.
BTW, my PhD is in Algebraic Topology, and I've worked in the private sector since 1995. I can assure you that your research topic won't hurt you, though perhaps some can help. All my jobs that attribute to getting a PhD were due to a proven ability to have disciplined thinking and the personal discipline to do the work.

I've spoken to a number of employed PhDs and we are about the only ones who ask what the PhD is in, or the specific topic in that subject. It is down right hilarious at times when you find out what someone's PhD area is.

Just enjoy the research, and develop some secondary skills, such as programming or the like.

If you are considering financial analysis after a PhD a strong knowledge of real analysis is the biggest prerequisite and it doesn't really matter if you do your PhD in the area or not. I think the idea is a doctorate proves you can learn what you need to know and the actual prerequisite knowledge is only at the masters level.
