Pi Day Coming Up Once Again Undergrad Life

March the 14th (this year as last year) will be Pi Day; written in the American system, it is 3/14, which are the first three significant digits of pi.

This can make a good not-very-serious activity for a Math Club or a Math Department.

A kind Anonymous Hero has made the following suggestions for things to mention for Pi Day:

  • On March 14, 2005, at 8:58am, listeners of NPR station KTEP (88.5 FM) will hear a special "Pi Day" edition of the "Desert Diaries" show, which will then be archived on the Centennial Museum's website (http://museum.utep.edu/archive/ddframe1.htm).
  • UTEP professor Larry Lesser's article on PI DAY in the current issue of Texas Mathematics .

  • UTEP professor Larry Lesser's song "American Pi".

It seems that Professor Lesser is described as the "Weird Al Yankovic of mathematics education" - he has versions of several classics on his website, including The Gambler and Hotel Infinity to the tune of Hotel California.
