Courses which I wish I had taken Grad Life

Now that I'm out of graduate school there are several courses that I wish I had taken in graduate school (and even some in undergrad)

Post a Comment

Before I state the courses, I should say that I teach at a small liberal arts college. That means as a teacher I am expected to be a jack-of-all trades and teach practically any course the department offers. Also while I am perfectly capable of learning topics on my own, that doesn't mean I wouldn't have prefered to have a class in it.

The courses

  • Statistics- not only have I had no course work in this, but as I teach statistics it seems more and more important that all students learn statistics these days for quantitative literacy.
  • Some applied courses- numerical analysis, partial differential equations, or otherwise. Students seem to appreciate applied topics and the ability to teach them is a boon on the job market.
  • A couple of pedagogy courses, one high school and one elementary school- I've taught the math for elementary ed class and I really wish I knew what they were taught in their pedagogy class. Also a fair percentage of our majors are preparing to teach high school and while I have some opinions on what they should know I'd like to know more. Actually I think it would be neat to take a pedagogy of pedagogy class.
  • A technical writing course- useful to me both in research and in teaching. While practice has made me a much better technical writer, teaching my school's Introductory Research Seminar has shown me how little I know about teaching math writing.
How about you? What courses do you wish you had taken?

[new] I constantly take courses (none / 0) (#3)

I've been taking about one course a year since I got my PhD.  Usually I take a special topics class in my subject area offered at a nearby university: Geometric Measure Theory, Mean Curvature Flow, Ricci Flow etc etc.

I wanted to learn some probability so I did an independant study with a student over the summer.  I don't like teaching while learning but an independant study helped me iron out any issues and give me someone to talk to.  Next I'll take some graduate probability.

I wanted to learn some general relativity and attended a few classes but was bored and just finished the textbook on my own.  Then I went on to a textbook designed for mathematicians learning the subject which was much better.

I've taken foreign languages and other fun courses for the first few weeks of a semester, just sitting in.
