Now that I'm out of graduate school there are several courses that I wish I had taken in graduate school (and even some in undergrad)

| Before I state the courses, I should say that I teach at a small liberal arts college. That means as a teacher I am expected to be a jack-of-all trades and teach practically any course the department offers. Also while I am perfectly capable of learning topics on my own, that doesn't mean I wouldn't have prefered to have a class in it.
The courses
-
Statistics- not only have I had no course work in this, but as I teach statistics it seems more and more important that all students learn statistics these days for quantitative literacy.
-
Some applied courses- numerical analysis, partial differential equations, or otherwise. Students seem to appreciate applied topics and the ability to teach them is a boon on the job market.
-
A couple of pedagogy courses, one high school and one elementary school- I've taught the math for elementary ed class and I really wish I knew what they were taught in their pedagogy class. Also a fair percentage of our majors are preparing to teach high school and while I have some opinions on what they should know I'd like to know more. Actually I think it would be neat to take a pedagogy of pedagogy class.

A technical writing course- useful to me both in research and in teaching. While practice has made me a much better technical writer, teaching my school's Introductory Research Seminar has shown me how little I know about teaching math writing.
How about you? What courses do you wish you had taken? |
