Hi, I would like to go for a PhD in Math.
Probably, I would like to do research in Combinatorics. I would like some recommendations for 1st tier, 2nd tier and 3rd tier schools
in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.
Here's my situation:

| I graduated with a BS in computer engineering from Georgia Tech back in Sept 1997. And since then I was a database programmer until March 2004. I got laid off and I decided to go for an advanced degree in Math as I don't feel like doing routine programing work anymore.
My overall GPA was 2.9 as I didn't study much during my senior year after I got a job offer. My Math GPA was 3.8. Now I am enrolled in Cal-State-Long Beach and am taking undergraduate upper-division Math classes.
I am not sure if should I apply for Fall 2005
or stay at Cal-State Long Beach for a year and apply for Fall 2006.
If I stay, I would have stronger letters of recommendation and a better track-record to show that I am serious about my studies.
However, I noticed that there are cases when people fail the preliminary exams and opt out with a MS/MA instead. I am concerned that if I stay for another year I might waste the money and effort, as I would be almost done with my graduate degree at Cal-State Long Beach.
I would really appreciate your input. |
