Once again, a few entities in the federal government are cautioning of a shortage of scientists in our future.

The Chronicle provides a pretty comprehensive examination of the state of things.

Didn't we hear something like this before?

Back in middle school--in the early '80s--I recall school assemblies galore raising the spectre of the Soviets trampling us due to such a shortfall of scientific brain power. So my friends and I took up the banner of Freedom and buckled down to learn more physics only to find a glut of science PhDs in the 1990s. Hmm...
