Financial woes at a small college. Career

I am an assistant professor at a small liberal arts college. When I accepted this position we were an expanding small school, which was planning to increase enrollment and to cut faculty teaching loads. It is a pleasant place to teach, with a mixed bag of students.

However that all changed last year.

Suddenly in the spring semester of last year it was determined we had been in financial trouble for quite some time and it hadn't been noticed. We were told cuts would have to be made and that we would "cut deeply once" . A number of staff were cut, a few faculty were given terminal contracts, and budgets were squeezed. The cuts were done after the students left for the summer and we found out most the details about how many cuts had been made from the local paper rather than from the administration. After all was said and done we had a new chief financial officer and a new president as well.

This year we were told money would be tight and there would be no raises. However we also had a low enrollment year, so budgets are more than tight again. So the cuts once have turned into cuts again. This time more faculty must be cut. Estimates vary on how many and the reasoning given for cutting faculty in particular is specious. Instead of making the cuts when we normally receive contract decisions for the next year in December, all untenured faculty received notice that contract decisions wouldn't be made until later with mid-March being the latest possible. Contract decisions were received in mid-February.

So it goes without saying that a number of untenured faculty including me went on the job market, albeit a little late, since we only heard mid-December about the new cuts. While I withdrew most of my applications after receiving my contract, there are a number of people who will be heading to new jobs voluntarily and not all of them are among the untenured. Faculty morale in general is quite low.

The strange thing is that I still like it here, I wouldn't mind staying, provided that the financial stuff goes away eventually and the administration treats us with more dignity in the future.

So I have to wonder, how many other places are in this kind of trouble right now?

I was in a similar type of institution with financial problems. Sorry to be pessimistic, but in my opinion, it's difficult (but not impossible) to turn around a downslide like that in an institution. I did change jobs to a place that was financially stable and have since learned that my former place of work is still in pretty much the same state, even after many years. There was another college in the area that actually closed down a few years ago because they were not solvent.

[new] Treating faculty as people not serfs (none / 0) (#2)

Hello, Glad you are not entirely unhappy there...but in addition to the comments someone made about finances in the first reply, I'm also not optimistic about the climate at your institution. Comments such as, "The cuts were done after the students left for the summer and we found out most the details about how many cuts had been made from the local paper rather than from the administration" do not suggest that it's the best place to stay for the rest of one's career (hmm, not a certain small college in central VA perhaps?) Just some thoughts..
