There's lots of information out there about how starting a family early in one's career can be detrimental. This article from The Chronicle goes back to discover the effects of having babies while still in grad school.

Referring to the Mason article mentioned here about how babies impact tenure prospects, the author takes the investigation further back to see how having children earlier in the academic career can be detrimental.

"Are the students' fears legitimate? In fact, Drago found that graduate students with children are less likely to end up at research universities. 'There is definitely a penalty,' he concluded. The issue has come up repeatedly in a project at Michigan State University that helps graduate students resolve conflicts with faculty memmbers. John Beck, a professor of labor relations there, and Karen Klomparens, dean of the graduate school, have developed videos presenting some common scenarios. In one, a graduate student who is a single parent cancels a discussion session because of a sick child. Her professor confronts her, pointing out that this is the third time she has canceled, and tells her that if things do not improve she may not be assigned a section next semester."

It was hard to read that article -- it feels like a problem with no answers. Actually, I'd suggest that early in grad school might be a good time (before the pressure of a dissertation is in full force), but often people aren't wanting kids at that point. And I suspect with myself, if I had had kids at any point in grad school I would never have finished my doctorate.

On the other hand, I know a lot of people who struggle with fertility, and so waiting until tenure seems like a risky venture (not at all impossible, just one more thing to consider).
