Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Math Undergrad Life

This February I attended the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Math. I'm a sophomore and I wanted some information on careers and on undergraduate research. The conference was very informative and definitely worth the effort of flying out to Nebraska.

I managed to go out to dinner with five graduate students from five different graduate schools. I listened to their stories about life in graduate school and their advice concerning applying to and choosing a graduate school. Should I choose to go to graduate school, I am much more prepared for the process from talking to these experienced students.

I was also able to talk to undergraduate women who had participated in programs and REUs that I am applying to this summer. They told me what they liked and disliked about the programs. Later, when I was accepted to two summer programs and had to choose between them, I emailed these girls for advice.

After one weekend at the Nebraska conference, I have developed a network of female mathematicians who I feel comfortable contacting for advice. It is definitely a program that I would suggest to any undergraduate woman interested in math.

[new] Networking! (none / 0) (#1)

One of the key reasons to go to meetings, at least in my mind, is exactly what this undergraduate student experienced - networking with other people in the profession. This includes people who are
  • at similar points in their career,
  • at different points in their career,
  • in similar fields,
  • in different fields,
  • geographicaly near by,
  • geographicaly distant,
  • etc.
Also, not only does networking give you a chance to get to know other people but it can also start getting you known by others which plays a role later in your career for things like getting
  • reserach collaborators,
  • a job (postdoc as well as tenure track),
  • tenure,
  • etc.
Finally, you also have the perk that going to conferences it typically just plain fun! (Unfortunatly, I had the flu last Jan when I went to the AMS/MAA Joint Meetings in Phoenix which did make it a bit less fun.)
