Here is an interesting webpage showing an M.C.Escher tesselation "wrapped into" a Mandelbrot set. The page also includes a brief description of how this "fractal tesselation" was obtained.

Hi! I'm Margarita Schultz. I work at Faculty of arts in Chile University. I 'm writting a paper about Escher and a Philosopher, and thinking about the way Escher construct his grids, I thought suddenly on Mandelbrot. I thought that there is something in common in the method they use... I looked for in Google and found your page! wonderful for me! thanks a lot Margarita Schultz mschultz@uchile,cl if you answer please write: Escher-Mandelbrot
