Kevin Charlwood called the meeting to order at 8:09 PM.
Attending were
Kevin Charlwood,
Karrolyne Fogel,
Chawne Kimber,
David Kung,
Heather Lewis,
Kim Roth,
John Vano,
Emil Volcheck
and guests
Frank Peters,
Sean Brennan,
Danielle LeBlanc,
Bridget LeBreaux.
We welcomed our four guests, all undergraduates at Southern Connecticut State University. They expressed their interest in learning more about the YMN and possibly joining the board.
We discussed the duties expected of editors.
We had previously decided that the minimum work that an editor should perform each year should include some useful task, such as editing an issue or organizing a panel discussion, as well as getting a story.
Now that we are using the Scoop engine as a basis for preparing each issue, Dave suggested that we move away from having a monthly editor and instead assign editors to work on and be responsible for different sections.
John volunteered to handle the technical aspect of putting together the Classic *Concerns* issue each month by forcing a Scoop digest and editing it by hand.
Frank, Sean, and Danielle said they would like to help out, and we welcomed them to the editorial board.
Kevin Charlwood announced that he would step down as managing editor but remain on the board. Emil Volcheck announced that he would step down from the board at the end of the meeting.
David Kung volunteered to serve as managing editor.
Everyone approved enthusiastically.
We drafted a preliminary list of editors and duties:
- Dave: managing editor
- Chawne: coordinator for Joint Mathematics Meetings events
- John V.: IT; YMN liaison to Project NExT
- Dov: IT (although Dov wasn't present, he had said by email that he wanted to help more with the Scoop site)
- Kim: Treasurer; Grad Life section
- Heather: Secretary; Work and Family Life section
- Karri: Job Search section
- Frank: Undergraduate Life (new section to be created by John)
We discussed various ideas for new initiatives and projects, including
- "hooks", like
- having a new poll each month,
- announcing interviews and collecting
questions from readers to be asked
in the interview.
- book reviews
- text recommendations
We discussed ideas for YMN events at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Atlanta next year.
Karri and Kim will work on a Two-Body Problem panel.
John V. will work on a careers panel. We think
he might be able to work with Phil Gustafson,
John Kuchenbrod, and maybe Linda Thiel (SIAM).
We outlined what schedule we would like to have:
- First panel discussion during the day on Wednesday, preferably 2:15-3:35 or 3:20-4:35,
- Town meeting Thursday 7:30 PM,
- Board meeting Friday 7 PM,
- Second panel Saturday, preferably 1 PM.
We talked about the purpose and mission of the YMN.
Dave suggested that we move away from the older mission statement that listed several specific goals and instead simply articulate a brief purpose:
The Young Mathematicians' Network:
serving the community of young mathematicians
since 1993.
There was general support for this.
A motion to remove Mark Winstead from the Editors mailing list passed unanimously.
The meeting adjourned around 10 PM.
(Some statistics for future reference:
the Classic *Concerns* list had 952 subscribers as of 1 January 2004, compared with 1160 in January 2001. On 25 January 2004, there
were 115 members registered on the Scoop site.)
