In the Chronicle: How Babies Alter Careers for Academics is an account of the work of Mary Ann Mason, dean of the graduate division at the University of California at Berkeley, who conducted a study to be published in 'Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science' next year.

She says she wanted "to address the question my women graduate students always ask me, Is there a good time to have a baby?"

The results? Having children derails a woman's career while enhancing a man's career.

This study confirms what I've heard through the grapevine.
<sigh>
However it also just confirms that there is no real good time to have a baby. Anyone have any other opinions?

[new] Results may vary (none / 0) (#2)

I suspect that results vary by institution, and even by department (or who is currently chair). I've found my college, and particularly my department, to be very family friendly. We all have children, and the three women who went up for tenure in the past two years all had the children within a few years of being hired. And we've all been awarded tenure. But it does seem to make a difference that we work around each other's schedules, babysit each other's children on weekends when someone has to come in for an open house, and are all (or have been, or plan to) be in the same boat.
