The Chronicle of Higher Education ran an article entitled Moving Toward Autonomy in a Postdoc on the role that a postdoc position plays as a transition to professional independence. The perspective of the article is general and therefore seems to focus on postdocs where your work in a specific researcher's lab (e.g., engineering and many sciences) rather than the more independent type postdocs that seem to be more common in mathematics.

| In any case, the article contains some good advice (especially for me since I'm just finishing my first year as a VIGRE postdoc :) so I thought it would be nice to share this with you folks (our loyal readers).
I posted in the Grad Life section because my guess is that the topic is of grave interest for our readers in grad school (as well as readers who are thinking of going to grad school).
I'm particularly interested in hearing the thoughts and comments from our readers who have either (a) had a postdoc experience or (b) skipped the postdoc thing and opted to go directly into research, teaching, and/or industry.
Do you agree with the advice given in the article? How well does it apply to mathematics postdocs? What piece of advice (mentioned in the article or your own pearl of wisdom) do/did you find most useful in making the transition from grad school to your professional career?
