Many application deadlines for graduate schools are fast approaching. If you have students applying for graduate school (or are applying yourself), the following websites might come in handy:
  1. AMS has a web site with information and links relevant to applying for graduate schools http://www.ams.org/employment/undergrad.html . Includes an online version of their "Assistantships and Graduate Fellowships" publication.
  2. PHDs.org has an interactive Graduate Schools Ranking program at http://www.phds.org/rankings/ . You choose your discipline and the qualities you desire in a graduate program. The rankings are based on data from the National Research Council.
  3. There is a wide range of information about applying for graduate schools at http://gradschool.about.com. This site provides general advice for writing application essays and letters of recommendations. There is also a page of links specifically about Graduate Study in Mathematics at http://gradschool.about.com/cs/mathematics/ .
  4. Many times information can be gleaned from a department's own website. The Math Department at the University of Texas has a list of links to U.S. Mathematics Departments at http://www.ma.utexas.edu/math-departments.html

[new] applying for grad school (none / 0) (#1)
by Anonymous Hero on Tue Jan 20, 2004 at 09:24:19 AM PDT

I am currently in the process of looking for a PhD program in Mathematics. I'm looking at all kinds of schools, but I want to make sure I find a supportive environment to work (and live) in. I want to find advisors that are "hands on" when it comes to research. Do any programs spring to mind? Thanks!

I'm glad that you posted the links, I'm fairly sure that I will get use for them. Especially the link to AMS seems to contain plenty of useful information.
