Today's Chronicle of Higher Education has a story titled "Perpetual Postdocs" about how new Ph.D.s in the sciences are spending more years as postdocs:

According to a recent report from the National Academy of Sciences, many postdocs in the biological sciences spend five or more years on the job, and those in other fields aren't far behind. Indeed, for some postdocs, five years is just the beginning.
The link for this NAS report is at http://www.nap.edu/books/0309069963/html/. The article describes how the oversupply of postdocs relative to desirable tenure-track positions leads to Ph.D.s spending several years as a postdoc. One recommendation discussed is to convert some of these postdoctoral positions into research associate positions.
