In this week's Chronicle of Higher Education, an article by Michele Singer describes "the Weasel clause" as
the often hidden clause in the university handbook that specifies that tenure and other appointment decisions need not be based on articulated criteria that can be objectively measured...
Faculty whose tenure is denied by means of such a provision, despite good research, teaching, and service, can't be distinguished from faculty denied tenure for poor job performance.
