Early '90s: production of PhDs high, influx from former Communist states, budget slashing states.

I was recently communicating with my dissertation advisor, updating him on my life and such, telling him about my prolonged unemployment. I had previously struggled coming out of school in '93, finishing up at a bad time and probably marketing myself wrong for that market. I made the transition to industry after a couple of years of struggling.

Nick's comment back was that he thought the academic market could be coming back to what I graduated in. Intriguing thought!

Consider

Early '90s: production of PhDs high, influx from former Communist states, budget slashing states.

Early '00s: budget slashing states, bad economy increasing grad student enrollment, economic models suggest slow recovery (i.e. those grad students starting might not come out in a good environment)

Will we see an influx of PhD math and science fleeing a war torn Middle East, partially mirroring the early '90s influx from Russia etc?

Certain elements in government making noise about investing in math and science, much like the late '80s. Hmmm.

Will YMN go full circle?
