In The Times today, there was a brief story about a French student who has been called "the greatest human calculator" for finding the 13th root of a 200-digit number in his head.

Mathematics Awareness Month News

It appears that April 2005 is Mathematics Awareness Month. The theme of this year is "Mathematics and the Cosmos".

There's a nice poster on their website, and some essays on how "[m]athematics is at the core of our attempts to understand the universe at every level". They also have a useful links section, and an events list.

Gender differences in Math and Science? News

According to the New York Times, "The president of Harvard University, Lawrence H. Summers, who offended some women at an academic conference last week by suggesting that innate differences in sex may explain why fewer women succeed in science and math careers, stood by his comments yesterday but said he regretted if they were misunderstood."

NSA Conference and Workshop Funding Opportunity News

The National Security Agency (NSA) solicits proposals for conferences and workshops in the areas of Algebra, Number Theory, Discrete Mathematics, Probability, and Statistics.  Proposals of up to $15,000 will be considered.  These grants may only be used to support conferences and workshops that conclude by September 30, 2005.  Efforts that encourage the participation of women and underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences are particularly welcomed.

Mathematics On The Small Screen News

NUMB3RS, a TV show with a detective who enlists his brother (who is a mathematician) to help solve crimes, will be premiering on Saturday on CBS.

I have no idea if it's going to be any good or not, but it also means that I can talk about Mathematical Fiction.

Math Skills Survey News

A test of mathematics skills for 15 year olds in 41 countries showed a disappointing showing for the US again. The US placed 28th.
