New Mersenne Prime Discovered News

The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search has discovered a new largest prime number; 2^{32,582,657}-1. This number has about 9.8 million decimal digits.

Fields Medals Awarded News

The Fields Medals for 2006 have been awarded in Madrid.

They were awarded to Andrei Okounkov, Grigori Perelman, Terence Tao, and Wendelin Werner. The surprising news is that Perelman turned down his Fields Medal.

Hyperbolics in Yarn News

The latest issue of Discover magazine has a three page article about Cornell U professor Daina Taimina who crochets hyperbolic surfaces. Also check out this related article about her work.

There's also a pair of mathematicians in England who crocheted a Lorenz manifold. Here's a preprint of the paper they wrote about it for Mathematics Intelligencer.
