Whew, that was close!
Like many places, the economy's nosedive has hit our university hard. Budgets are tighter than ever and according to some friends across the country, some places are facing hiring freezes. It looked like that might happen here as well. Just this week we finally got the go-ahead to proceed with our search. That meant trying to agree on the wording of the ad...

Hey... it's grad school applications season and I was hoping to get a feel of how good my application is. I'm currently in a strong math program at a Canadian university and I want to go to the US for grad studies in pure math. Here's some info about me:
General GRE scores: 800Q(94%)/460V(50%)/5AW(77%),
GRE Math Subject test: expecting 80-85%ile

What Kind of Job do I REALLY Want?

As I mentioned earlier, this is my second time applying for jobs. When I applied for jobs last time, I had a tough time deciding on what kind of job I really wanted. Did I want a tenure-track job or a postdoc? Would I take a research job or a teaching job? Or would I get out of academia completely and go work in industry? My thesis advisor was pushing me to go the postdoc route, but I wasn't sure that's what I wanted. To be honest, each of these seemed to me to be equally valid options at the time, and I started the job process without having any idea where I would end up.

Many young mathematicians are either looking for tenure-track positions or are currently in tenure-track positions. In these cases, it's important to ask good questions of the people who oversee the tenure process at a particular school in order to get information about the process -- and to see how good the process really is at those schools. Here are four questions that get to the heart of the matter along with suggestions for how to interpret the responses you might get.

I am on the job market this year, and was asked to blog about my experiences here. I thought I'd start by sharing a little about me. I currently hold a postdoc that places approximately equal emphasis on research and teaching. My time here is coming to a close, so I'm back on the market again. I do feel fortunate to have a little better idea of what I'm getting into this year. I remember being rather shocked at how many things are required for an academic job application... the research statement, the teaching statement, the vita, the AMS cover sheet, and all that. Hopefully coming into it knowing that I need all those things I'll be better prepared...

Gowers sheds light on the upcoming "math tricks" wiki

Timothy Gowers, Fields Medalist and editor of the Princeton Companion to Mathematics, is now about to unveil a mathematical "tricks" wiki known as the Tricki. The Tricki will initially be a collection of wiki articles on general and specific mathematical problem solving techniques. But what's interesting is that Gowers wants to grow the Tricki into a kind of expert system which will semi-automatically guide mathematicians through problem solving tasks using collected knowledge. Here's the article from Gowers' blog about all that.
I wonder if, in the future, instead of having advisors, PhD students will just be pulling open problems off of a discussion board and solving them with the help of a wiki.
