This February I attended the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Math. I'm a sophomore and I wanted some information on careers and on undergraduate research. The conference was very informative and definitely worth the effort of flying out to Nebraska.
I managed to go out to dinner with five graduate students from five different graduate schools. I listened to their stories about life in graduate school and their advice concerning applying to and choosing a graduate school. Should I choose to go to graduate school, I am much more prepared for the process from talking to these experienced students.

March the 14th will be Pi Day; written in the American system, it is 3/14, which are the first three significant digits of pi.
This is a great not-very-serious activity for a Math Club.

From TOMORROW'S PROFESSOR(SM) LISTSERV, posted with permission.
Folks:
The posting below gives some good advice for those students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. It is from Chapter 2: Deciding If and How to Pursue Doctoral Work by Tim Wilson, Nelson Soto and Jami
Joyner in Journey to the Ph.D.: How to Navigate the Process as African Americans. Edited by Anna L. Green & LeKita V. Scott. Published in 2003 by Stylus Publishing, LLC, 22883 Quicksilver Drive Sterling, Virginia 20166. Copyright 2003 by Stylus Publishing, LLC Reprinted with permission.

There is an article on the Chronicle to higher education website describing the odd process that is writing a personal statement for your graduate applications.

I'm teaching at a small liberal arts college, and our students have sometimes had difficulty adjusting to PhD programs. Is there a way to find out which graduate schools are particularly supportive of their new students during this transition?

There is an interesting story on Slashdot entitled Ripoff 101: Gouging Students for Textbooks.
For mathematics, it does seems especially true that textbooks are outrageously priced. Couple this with the fact that they seem to come out with a new edition about every other year and it really does seem like publishers are out to squeeze every dime out of the student masses! What do other readers think?

This is an article-length follow-up to the panel discussion "What can I do with a degree in mathematics?" I was a 1997 BA graduate of a liberal arts college with a degree in math (applied). When I spoke to John Vano in Madison recently, he mentioned this panel discussion and noted that no one present made more than a passing mention of the actuarial profession. Here follows the story of someone who is currently pursuing the profession.

Ever wanted to know what all of your options are for careers with your math degree? At the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Phoenix [1/10/2004] the YMN and MAA hosted a panel entitled "What can you do with a degree in mathematics?" at which we addressed some of the options that are avaliable from industry to grad school and other things in between. In the following story we present a summary of this panel discussion and invite our readers to continue the discussion in the comments!
