Funding for Graduate School

When accepted to a program, one would hope they would have full funding.
I am in the process of applying to graduate schools and wondered what advice graduate students, and really anyone, have about funding for graduate school.
I know there are many public and private sources for support for graduate school, but is it worth it to try to gain support for outside places if you have a variety of programs you are applying to and it might affect your package at some? Do you think this is an attractive feature for applicants to have? Or it just complicates things entirely?
What sources did you wish you had tapped into? Did you wish you had bargained more than you did? Can you bargain? Is that common for math programs?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

March the 14th (this year as last year) will be Pi Day; written in the American system, it is 3/14, which are the first three significant digits of pi.
This can make a good not-very-serious activity for a Math Club or a Math Department.

Several students have recently asked me for advice on the essay required for most REU applications. Here's some advice from some of the people who read those essays.

Publishers to blame for increasing cost of college text books.

Wisconsin Public Radio aired and interesting segment on the increasing cost of college text books. It cited a new report by the Wisconsin Public Interest Research Group which states publishers are to blame (listen). We have addressed this topic previously but I'm glad to hear that this is an issue that is actually being explored by a public interest research group.
So, my question to readers is how can 'we the people' bring about a change in the indurstry?
Is it up to students, professors, or maybe free online textbooks (e.g. MIT's OpenCourseWare or Rice's Connexions)?

I'm currently an undergrad at the University of Minnesota and am working on getting my BS in Computer Science then finishing my Math degree and I want to go to grad school to get my Ph.D in Mathematics.
So, I was wondering what makes a strong application to grad school? I'm a decent student, but I've never been terribly concerned about grades (I know that's gonna bite me in the butt though). I started off a little shakey (B/B- average), but now I'm getting B+'s and above in my upper level courses. Beyond grades what can I do to make my application stand out? And what Math courses should I take before I graduate? I have no problem doing the work and I generally enjoy the courses, I just don't have stellar grades.

Applying to graduate school is a lot of work, so be prepared to devote a substantial amount of time to not only the application process but also the initial identification of schools and needed follow-up with the department and/or graduate advisers.
