Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Program Undergrad Life

Hi I am considering applying to the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program - has anyone heard about how hard/easy it is to get accepted - do you have the be the next Fermat or Gauss to be confident in your chances? Also, has anyone found this program to be of significant value on grad school applications and such? Just curious - information on this seems to be very hard to come by. Any info would be appreciated.

Below is some information on an undergraduate math conference. This is a great experience for undergrads to get their feet wet in the never ending world of research and presentations. And even better, not only I am presenting, but I get to help organize this year.

Requesting Letters of Recommendation Undergrad Life

I have recently had several students ask me to write letters of recommendation for them, a task I often enjoy. Some of these recent requests, however, were presented in such a clear and organized manner that I wanted to capitalize on their hard work by summarizing steps that students can take to make the experience as easy and pleasant as possible.

Math and the Computer Science Major Undergrad Life

Computer science majors tend to struggle for reasons that have very little to do with computers. More often than not, such struggles are rooted in weaknesses related to math. If you plan on getting a CS degree, you need to come to grips with one important fact first: computer science has more to do with math than computers.

Many of my colleagues have been involved in REUs over the years; I have been working with students too this summer. In this note I'll collect a few of my thoughts on them.

Choosing a grad school Undergrad Life

Here's a link to an article by Horizons magazine from long ago on choosing a graduate school.
http://www.maa.org/students/choose_gradsch.html
What actually brought this up was a discussion about what were good questions ask about a grad school when you were on a campus visit. A list of some such questions is available at Sarah Marie Belcastro's website:
http://cerebro.cs.xu.edu/~smbelcas/grad_school_qs.pdf
Perhaps it might be helpful to contribute some other questions worth asking while on a visit to a potential graduate school.

Hi, I am currently a maths student in doing the part III(extra 4th year) at cambridge uni and am wondering whether to apply for phd's in america. My first question is: It seems at least some elements of most phd's in america are taught? Is this true. Secondly:Does anyone know how likely is it that I could get funding? Thanks for any advise/explanations, icicle

How were the Joint Meetings?
Fantastic! We shouldn't wait another 15 years to go back!
Nice, except for that crazy violin talk.
Don't know - I only saw the inside of the Employment Center
If we had any travel money, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it
