As it does for various holidays and other days of note, it appears that today Google has replaced its standard logo with a fractal logo. The images just links to a
Julia Fractals image search so I'm not sure what this is "in honor" of. Anyone out there have any ideas (maybe Mandelbrot or Gaston Julia's birthday?)
[editor's note, by dkung] Good guess! Gaston Julia was born on this day (Feb. 3) in 1893 in Sidi Bel Abbes, Algeria.

The Applied Math Junkies and Monty Python fans out there (or at least those fans of their movie "The Holy Grail") might be interested in reading the following link which actually develops an estimate for the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow using "Strouhal numbers and simplified flight waveforms".
Ni!

Just in case you haven't seen Andrew Lipson's Mathematical Lego Sculptures site , it contains pictures of lego models of everything from Mobius strips, trefoil and figure eight knots to Cross-Caps and minimial surfaces. Check it out!
