While browsing the web I found this.
Gifts for the significant mathematician in your life can be found here.
And this features arithmetic series in connection with the carol The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Mathematicians everywhere were thrilled when the Broadway play "Proof" came out. Finally a positive portrayal of a mathematician - a welcome relief from the insane (A Beautiful Mind) and the murderous (the Unabomber). Now it's coming out on the big screen with Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins. And if you're near DC, there are free tickets available for an advance screening on August 26th...

Euler gives us yet another thing to scratch our heads about. According to a Wilkipedia article on Sudoku it all starts with Euler. This articles leads one to an online article from The Observer that states, "The Sudoku story began in 1783 when Leonhard Euler, a Swiss mathematician, devised 'Latin Squares', which he described as 'a new kind of magic squares'. Euler had come up with a grid in which every number or symbol appears once in each row or column. More than two centuries later, the difference for Sudoku players is that the grid is subdivided into blocks of nine."

Little known fact, but the Pi of the Month Club has declared today, 7/22 otherwise written as 22/7, Casual Pi Day.
So, I don't know what you'll do today, but enjoy some pie while thinking about pi (don't watch the movie pi, because it's really about phi).
Happy Casual Pi Day to you!
- Vanes.

AMS Opposes Academic Boycotts

Just thought I'd relay the message:
"At a recent meeting of the British Association of University Teachers, delegates approved a resolution to boycott two universities in Israel. The AMS is opposed to academic boycotts, and at its January 2003 meeting, the Council endorsed a statement of opposition from the National Academy of Sciences. A more recent statement from the American Association of University Professors reflects this opposition as well. [Item posted May 12, 2005]" can be found here
