Second and Third Postdocs Job Search

By Emil Volcheck
from the Perpetual Postdoc department

In today's job market where tenure-track jobs are scarce, but VIGRE postdocs are readily available, are we seeing a trend towards second postdocs?

"The Other Candidate" Job Search

By chawne
from the bewildered department

Today's "Chronicle of Higher Education" has a diary entry of a man contemplating why a black man was hired instead of him. It's an honest description of his thoughts:

"Is it wrong to wonder how heavily race worked in the other guy's favor and against mine?"

See: The Other Candidate for the full text.

I'd welcome some discussion...

Discrimination at [name removed] University Job Search

By mehmath
Posted Wed Jun 25, 2003 at 04:20:31 PM PDT
I am a new Ph.D. in mathematics and have been looking for a job in college teaching. I was invited for a campus interview to [name removed] University. The interview went really well and I got excellent feedbacks from the search committee during my entire visit. Even though I was one of the top candidates for one of the positions, I was definitely discriminated against my nationality and consequently not offered the job. I have contacted the Affirmative Action Office of [name removed] University, but no answer so far. I just do not know what else to do about this terrible incident. I would really appreciate if anybody helps me on this issue or give me some directions. Sincerely.

Liberal Arts Jobs - Advice from the other side. Job Search

By dkung

When I was finishing my degree back in 2000, I was specifically looking for a job at a liberal arts school. I had an enormous amount of support (from recent grads, from classmates, and from sources like YMN), and my search eventually landed me in an ideal spot at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Since then, I've been on the other side of the interview table twice. Nothing teaches you how to be a better candidate than reading hundreds of applications, talking to candidates on the phone, interviewing them at the joint meetings, and welcoming them to campus. While I don't have plans to use this knowledge personally, I hope that others in the YMN community can benefit from the lessons I've learned on this side of the table.

Hi All, I'm graduating this May. I've applied for postdoc positions but I have yet to hear from any places. The only exception being a rejection from Cal-Tech. I'd like to know what's going on out there. So please speak out freely!

Problems with Reimbursement Job Search

By chelst
Posted Wed Jan 22, 2003 at 04:13:46 PM PDT

Hi readers!

Has anyone else ever travelled for a job interview and had trouble obtaining reimbursement for travel expenses? This has happened to me on multiple occasions. I would be interested in knowing if my experience is just an isolated phenomenon or part of a larger problem.

Just post a comment to this note, or you may e-mail me so that if I compile the information into an article, you may remain anonymous.

Dov Chelst
