Release of information Job Search

Our HR office now requires "online" applications for positions, with at least a minimal set of information (name, phone, email) and questions (we will request that application materials be sent as normal to limit problems and hastle for applicants). One of the few remaining required questions asks for a response to "I hereby authorize the release of information held by any parties regarding previous employment, criminal history record, record of convictions ... credit history, worker's compensation history, driving record, scholastic educational records ..." Applicants are not required to click on "I agree" but we contend that many applicants could find this to be annoying and/or offensive and may in some cases choose to opt out of applying and go on to their next job application. We think that most have no objections to things like informal contacts with colleagues, but of course this asks for much more than that. I would be interested in seeing comments on this issue. Would you respond "I do not agree" to such a question?

Mathematics departments, when conducting a search, typically use a variety of interviewing methods. In addition to the all-important on-campus interview, a department usually conducts additional interviews over the phone or at the Joint Meetings. What is the purpose of each type of interview? How should you prepare for each? What should you expect? What do potential employers look for? This panel discussion provided informative, practical advice on interviewing by answering these questions as well as others from the audience. The panelists represented a diversity of school sizes as well as years of experience.

For almost everyone, the transition from graduate school to their first academic job is difficult. The process of changing from graduate school to a 'real' job often involves a paradigm shift in how you think about mathematics and deciding what kind of mathematician you want to become. In this transition there are a number of issues that you need to decide. Do you want to focus on research or teaching? Small college or large university? This panel featured speakers from a variety of different situations and backgrounds who described their job expectations and explained why they chose it. The speakers presented the audience with a taste of the different types of jobs that are possible after graduate school.
