742 applicants, 114 employers. That was posted at the front of the Employment Center at the Washington, DC Joint Mathematics Meeting. How's that for intimidating/depressing? This is the time when it starts to set in for all of us applicants that no matter what our CV looks like, there are at least 741 other people out there vying for the same positions.

Now that the Joint Meetings are over, the next step in your job search is probably a campus interview. We've run lots of stories in the past with advice for going on these always stressful and sometimes fun-filled adventures. Instead of making you search the archives (always an option with our search page), I'll put a bunch of links to particularly good posts after the jump...

[from the comments ]
A few years ago we at YMN discussed hosting a "Rumor Mill" where candidates could exchange information on their job searches. Back when I was on the job market, a few of us did this and it was immensely helpful to know which schools had already set up interviews, who had made campus interview invitations, and what offers were looking like. In the end, we decided that this wasn't the sort of thing we wanted host.
Looks like someone is doing it on their own here . If you're on the job market, check it out.

When I last wrote, the department had posted its ad and we were starting to see a flood of applications. At least this year the flood was electronic and not tsunami of paper. I recently had the honor of sitting down and reading them all. After that, I've got more than a few pieces of advice...

Whew, that was close!
Like many places, the economy's nosedive has hit our university hard. Budgets are tighter than ever and according to some friends across the country, some places are facing hiring freezes. It looked like that might happen here as well. Just this week we finally got the go-ahead to proceed with our search. That meant trying to agree on the wording of the ad...

What Kind of Job do I REALLY Want?

As I mentioned earlier, this is my second time applying for jobs. When I applied for jobs last time, I had a tough time deciding on what kind of job I really wanted. Did I want a tenure-track job or a postdoc? Would I take a research job or a teaching job? Or would I get out of academia completely and go work in industry? My thesis advisor was pushing me to go the postdoc route, but I wasn't sure that's what I wanted. To be honest, each of these seemed to me to be equally valid options at the time, and I started the job process without having any idea where I would end up.

I am on the job market this year, and was asked to blog about my experiences here. I thought I'd start by sharing a little about me. I currently hold a postdoc that places approximately equal emphasis on research and teaching. My time here is coming to a close, so I'm back on the market again. I do feel fortunate to have a little better idea of what I'm getting into this year. I remember being rather shocked at how many things are required for an academic job application... the research statement, the teaching statement, the vita, the AMS cover sheet, and all that. Hopefully coming into it knowing that I need all those things I'll be better prepared...
