Blogging our search - the Search begins Job Search

I've been asked by YMN to blog about our search for a new mathematician. I am excited to do so, but my department is less than thrilled to air its dirty laundry. So please understand my situation. I'll be writing about our search anonymously.

Last week the department met to get things rolling with our search ...

Anecdotes of the JMM: Application numbers Job Search

By halewis

We recently returned from interviewing candidates at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, and through hallways conversations I heard of some differences from earlier job searches. I'm wondering if others have found anything similar or different.

I had noticed before the meetings that we had slightly fewer applications than last time, although the pool of those who did apply was just as strong. In chatting with others at the JMM, it sounded like schools who stuck with paper applications had the same trend. I spoke with a few schools that used MathJobs.org, however, and they received many more applications than in the past.

On the other hand, MathJobs.org states, "In the last 12 months, 196 employers from 42 states in 3 countries have used the service for 522 job ads;...4540 applicants have submitted 89790 applications, with an average of 19.78 positions applied per applicant." It's not a huge number of positions that the applicants are applying to on average, so I'm not sure how much weight to place is my observations.

Have Math searches moved to fall? Job Search

As recently as 10 years ago, you never would have heard of a college or university going finishing a job search before the New Year. There were many advantages to this sort of system for both sides of the interview table.

Word on the street is that times are changing. More below the fold...

Here is a link to an informal (yet lengthy) essay about my job search experience as a Mathematics Ph.D. Candidate. I describe just about all my ups and downs and uncertainties of the process. I hope some people will find this webpage helpful for their own future experiences. -R. Philip Grizzard, Ph.D. (as of 4 days ago!)

The academic job wiki has been around for a couple of years and is always mentioned on the Chronicle of Higher Education job forum. It is a place where information on what part of the search the search committees are on. This year for the first time math is included and its info can be found here.

How's the Job Market This Year? Job Search

By dkung
Posted Fri Jan 26, 2007 at 09:19:29 AM PDT
Every year is a little different. This year's Employment Center at the Joint Meetings had 129 employers and 612 applicants (see www.ams.org/emp-reg/#LASTYEAR for details on this year's data.) There also seemed to be a record number of interviews taking place outside the Employment Center. The Networking Room looked more like an interview room to me. What's your impression of the job market this year? Add your comments below...
