Now that the Joint Meetings are over, the next step in your job search is probably a campus interview. We've run lots of stories in the past with advice for going on these always stressful and sometimes fun-filled adventures. Last year we had a couple of people blog about their searches (one from each side of the table.) Instead of making you search the archives (always an option with our search page), I'll put a bunch of links to particularly good posts after the jump...

Entering this past school year, my singular intent was to find a job in academia. I gathered together the myriad pieces of job apps in advance, picked the brains of my adviser, my friends, past grad students, etc. for all manner of advice; googled articles and got organized early. From August through April, I found myself shifting decidedly from one aspect of the job search to another.

The 3rd annual Career Mentoring
Worskhop (CaMeW) for Women in the mathematical sciences will be held July
26-28, 2009 at Wheaton College (Massachusetts). The goals of the workshop
are to help inform women finishing their PhDs about different aspects of
the job search and different career paths and to introduce them to peers
and mentors on whom they can call over the next year (and beyond). The
program has a small number of participants (10-15 per summer) and is run
by a diverse group of mentors (both junior and senior faculty from many
different types of institutions). We've received lots of positive
feedback from the previous 2 years' participants about how much the
program has helped prepare them for the job search in terms of thinking
about their options and giving them extra confidence in themselves.
We are currently soliciting applications from women who are intending to
finish their PhDs next year. Funding from an MAA/Tensor grant, Wheaton College and the Math Department
at the US Military Academy at West Point will provide at least partial
funding for all participants.
You can find more information at our website:
http://www.wheatoncollege.edu/CaMeW/. The application deadline is May
15th.

I recently applied for faculty positions at liberal arts colleges, and found that there was no "central database" for mathematics jobs and no "keyword" for liberal arts jobs.
I will share my lessons learned so that others do not have to re-invent the wheel.

Our search is in a holding pattern right now, waiting to complete campus interviews. In the mean time, I did a little digging regarding what sort of salary we should be offering our top candidate. Data on the flip side...

Like many employers, we interviewed most of our top candidates at the Joint Meetings in DC. It's the third time I've done these sort of interviews (at least on this side of the table), but it's been a few years. Mostly we thought our candidates were great. Only a few times did the time seem to drag on forever (always a bad sign from either side). More thoughts after the jump...
