Childcare is still available, with guaranteed spots for those who register by December 8, at the 2007 Joint Mathematics Meeting in New Orleans January 5-8. The childcare information is available here and it is once again being run through the KiddieCorp Children's Program.

AAUP resources for balancing work and family Work and Family Life

While browsing the web, I came across a few older articles from the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) that seemed worth sharing.

The first, from 2002, describes a then-new guidebook about the Family and Medical Leave Act as applied to the Academic Community. While the booklet is not free, there is a sample of ten real-life Questions and Answers here.

The second item of interest is an entire online issue of Academe (the bi-monthly publication of the AAUP) from October-November 2004 devoted to Balancing Faculty Careers and Family Work. The articles all appear to be viewable to the public.

"The Next Chapter" in the Chronicles Work and Family Life

By halewis
Posted Mon Jun 05, 2006 at 09:44:12 PM PDT
In The Next Chapter, posted May 1, 2006 in the Chronicle Careers section of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Paige Newcastle (a pseudonym) reflects on "the middle passage through academe" -- the period after jobs have been gotten, and families started. For her and her academic husband, life turned out well, but not necessarily the way she expected.

This article is one of the Balancing Act columns, which examine "How to find a balance between work and family". Other recent columns describe telling a dissertation committee about pregancy, a snapshot of a single professor trying to adopt a child during the tenure process, and a new faculty member's dangerous attempt to lose weight.

For some, summer can be a time to calm down in terms of academic commitments. But for others, their overachieving children may be sent to a variety of different academic and non-academic camps. For an unconventional summer project, why not enter the Kids Go Crazy 4 Math Contest?

The Kids Go Crazy 4 Math main site quips: "Do you see math everywhere you look? Tell us how you use math in an activity you enjoy and you might win a prize."

TP Message #613:

"The details of the stories varied widely, but common themes included the necessity for choices and giving up on some things, the benefits of shared responsibilities, the importance of private time for self and spouse, and for developing strategies that work. Specific strategies included setting priorities consistent with family, limiting travel, delegating responsibility, and advance planning and anticipating."

There has been discussion for several years about the availability of childcare at mathematics conferences. Now there will be childcare services at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Atlanta in January 2005. The children's program is provided by KiddieCorp.

Registration is available now through December 8 (details at the link above), and the response at this meeting will be used to help decide if this service should be offered in the future.
