Diaries (page 2)
I hate being suckered by my brain. Diaries

By atomikwolf
Posted Fri Mar 18, 2005 at 11:57:01 PM PDT
It is now 1:23 AM Saturday morning, and I've spent pretty much my entire spring break trying to figure out the details of the 3x+1 problem.

I confess, I saw it online about a week ago something talking about it, and I thought that if I tried hard enough I could come up with a proof for it. I wanted to scour the internet looking for what others had done to avoid their mistakes, but being a poor math student already and only been up to Trig (for now) I was subsequently lost by all the terminologies. Whatever, I kept going.

And now its 1:25 AM and I think I may have annoyed the entire math department at the college I am attending - I've emailed practically everyone in the math department, only to forget that everyone is gone for spring break. I even emailed a few folks at other universities, hoping to have someone explain to me all these mathematical concepts so that I might better understand the problem.

I hate being myself.

Happy Pi Day Diaries

By jvano
Posted Mon Mar 14, 2005 at 05:09:57 PM PDT
Math club had several pies and a Jepordy style trivia game with a Pi theme.

Someone also pointed out this mnemonic for the digits of pi (and extended version of a classic).

Happy 3.14!

Connexions Diaries

By jvano
Posted Fri Nov 19, 2004 at 12:10:00 PM PDT
Connexions is a Plone site at Rice.

From their page: Knowledge should be free, open, and shared. Connexions is a rapidly growing collection of free scholarly materials and a powerful set of free software tools to help: (1) authors publish and collaborate, (2) instructors rapidly build and share custom courses, (3) learners explore the links among concepts, courses, and disciplines.

I saw this a while ago when I was looking at plone stuff, but then also got from Nigel Boston the following:

Speaker: Rich Baraniuk (Rice University)

Title: The Connexions Project

12-1pm, Monday - 3609 Engineering Hall

Abstract - Connexions is a collaborative, community-driven approach to authoring, teaching, and learning that aims to capture and convey the dynamic, continuum of knowledge by fully exploiting information technology. Available free of charge to anyone under open-content and open-source licenses, Connexions offers high-quality, custom-tailored electronic course material, is adaptable to a wide range of learning styles, and provides tools that encourage students to explore the links among concepts, courses, and disciplines. In contrast to the traditional process of textbook writing and publishing, Connexions fosters world-wide, cross-institution communities of authors, instructors, and students, who collaboratively and dynamically fashion modules, courses, and curricula. This talk will overview the vision, goals, and progress of the project over the past five years. More information on Connexions can be found at http://cnx.rice.edu/

Great! I had 20+ interviews in San Diego!
Fine - it looks like I'll get a few on-campus invitations
OK, I'm crossing my fingers
Bad. I got all dressed up for nothing.
