Grading AP calculus exams was suggested to me by someone at Mathfest last summer as a quick way to make some money for the summer without having to summer teach. Before I went I could definitely tell that the money wasn't bad for a week's worth of grading, but what I didn't suspect was how much fun I would have while there.

Is it just whining, or do unmarried/unattached single faculty members have a point or two when delineating differences in experiences? Bella DePaulo, visiting prof at UC-Santa Barbara, takes the reins in opening up some touchy avenues of discussion. Read about it in Singular Mistreatment in this week's Chronicle.

I am an assistant professor at a small liberal arts college. When I accepted this position we were an expanding small school, which was planning to increase enrollment and to cut faculty teaching loads. It is a pleasant place to teach, with a mixed bag of students.
However that all changed last year.

Recently The Chronicle of Higher Education had an interesting article talking about what to do when someone you know contacts you asking for "inside" information about a search in your school/department.
What should or shouldn't you tell them?
Is it ethical to "dig around" for them?
The author also gives several interesting anecdotes about his experiences.
In addition to this article, I'm also very interested to hear the thoughts and comments of our readers as well as any anecdote from those of you "on the inside" (in tenure track or tenured positions).

In the extended copy, Alan Schoenfeld of the University of California-Berkeley discusses several personal issues related to the process of getting tenure, which should be of great interest to junior mathematicians, particularly those in academia. It was posted recently on the Project NExT list, which is a closed list; the author's permission has been given to use his piece in its entirety.
