[new] Transferring grad schools (none / 0) (#1)
by kristimeyer on Mon Mar 26, 2007 at 08:12:35 AM PDT

I don't know if it is a common practice for someone in your situation to transfer schools, but it certainly has been done before. Based on the timing, you may have difficulty in being accepted to a graduate school if you are looking for funding in the fall. However, you can probably get accepted into a Ph.D. program at another school if you're willing to just be a student and not have an assistantship for a semester or a year. With regard to classes transferring, this also varies from school to school. In the experiences that I've heard about, many schools will accept some transfer credits but will not accept the transfer of "core" classes (any classes that are to be taken in preparation for qualifying exams). Therefore, you may end up taking classes over that you've already taken once. Generally, I think that most schools require their core classes to be taken in residence and not transferred from another graduate program. I would also recommend that, if possible, you get a masters degree from your current university before they kick you out (if you don't have one already). This way, you at least have something to show from your three years in graduate school. A masters degree may also make it easier to transfer directly into the Ph.D. program at another university. Good luck!
