The first time I took the math subject GRE I scored something like a 60. I took it again at the next opportunity (a few months later) and scored an 80, which was good enough to get me in some places. So it is possible to improve yout score significantly. Of course, it also helps to study and practice, such as with the Cracking the GRE text that the other poster recommended.
